Description

The CNC Prototype Machinist / Programmer supports the Product Development team by programming, setting up, and operating machining equipment to produce prototype parts, tooling, and components. This position requires independent interpretation of drawings, selection of machining methods, and sound judgment in determining tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting conditions.

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and operate CNC machining equipment.

• Interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and applicable geometric dimensioning and tolerancing requirements.

• Determine machining sequences, workholding methods, cutting tools, and inspection methods.

• Calculate and adjust speeds, feeds, depth of cut, and other machining parameters based on material, tooling, machine capability, and part requirements.

• Troubleshoot machining issues involving tool wear, chatter, chip control, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy.

• Verify programs and setups, establish offsets, and inspect first-piece and completed parts.

• Machine prototype and low-volume parts while maintaining quality and reasonable processing time.

• Work with engineers and other shop personnel to resolve machining and manufacturability issues.

Recognize drawing discrepancies or machining concerns and seek clarification before proceeding.

• Document programs, setups, tooling, and machining processes so jobs can be repeated.

• Maintain machining documentation and follow shop safety and housekeeping requirements.

• Handle parts, tooling, and materials safely to prevent injury or damage.

• Communicate job status, material needs, and equipment issues to the supervisor.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience programming, setting up, and operating CNC machining equipment.

• Ability to operate CNC lathes and CNC milling machines.

• Experience operating grinding equipment and performing basic bench work.

• Ability to work independently from engineering drawings.

• Working knowledge of cutting tools, workholding, material machinability, and precision measurement.

• Ability to explain and apply speed and feed calculations and troubleshoot more complex cutting conditions.

• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

• CAD/CAM experience is preferred.

• Minimum of 10 years of machining experience.

• Minimum of 4 years of programming and machine setup experience.
